Although various forms of ‘theme-first’ principles have been proposed, its universality has been questioned with a number of counterexamples and the existence of arguably ‘rheme-first’ languages. Since theme-first principles still seems to play a significant role in accounting for word order in many languages, it is worth pursuing whether there is a principle that would be consistent with the observation. This paper applies an idea in information theory to the analysis of information...

While information structure has traditionally been viewed as a single partition of information within an utterance, there are opposing views that identify multiple such partitions in an utterance. The existence of alternative proposals raises questions about the notion of information structure itself and also its relation to discourse structure. This paper supports the traditional view by observing contextual requirements and linguistic phenomena associated with information structure for each...

Coordination of unlike categories, e.g., at the complement position of predicative be , has been a problem for grammar formalisms and NLP systems. Unlike all previous approaches, this paper challenges the very assumption that such coordination is of unlike categories, by introducing a new category that covers certain NPs, AdjP, etc., on the semantic ground. The paper argues that such a move does not introduce new problems; all the problems discussed in the paper must be dealt with by...

This thesis has examined physical therapists’ (PTs’) beliefs about successful patient outcomes (SPO). Literature on PTs’ beliefs about SPO is extremely limited and outcomes are not clearly defined. The purpose of this research was to obtain a deeper understanding of PTs’ beliefs about SPO by asking: 1) what are PTs’ beliefs about factors that facilitate SPOs; 2) what are PTs’ beliefs about factors that interfere with SPOs; and 3) what factors influenced the formation of PTs’...

How many of us are fully making sense of our lives? Ava’s Bedside introduces a fable in which a dying hippo struggles with this question. Through conversation with other hippos, she finally realizes what is missing from her life. This book also contains a detailed commentary on the fable. The commentary discusses the importance of secure child-parent attachment for a meaningful life, referring to ideas in attachment theory

The essence of this essay can be captured in the following quote from Harrison's book: “Can education shift from its current model of shaping children into components of economic production, into an active experiment in optimizing the creativity of the whole child?” In contrast to the selling mode of education, this essay echoes past progressive educators’ message in some specific way and introduces a new metaphor of education (from the educator’s view point) as a “buying” process.

Although the k statistic has been used widely as an indicator of rater agreement, there have been some concerns about the existence of different definitions and some peculiar results involving skewed data. This note evaluates different definitions of k and also demonstrates that the problem with directly comparing k values, especially for skewed data, can be avoided by comparing their significance.

Although virtually unknown outside Japan, there is an extremely effective approach to periodontal home care. This approach was developed by Dr. Tsuneo Katayama (1910 – 2006), a Japanese periodontist with over fifty years of clinical and research experience. This essay introduces the basics of the Katayma method with the author's own experience.

While attachment is crucial in attachment theory, non -attachment is valued in Buddhism. Is there any contradiction between these two? For example, would it be absurd to pursue both attachment and non-attachment, as can be seen in the practice of mindful parenting? Since both attachment theory and Buddhism explore the essence of well-being, it would be useful to identify the connection between them. This essay discusses relevant notions and points out that there is no contradiction between...
